History is alive and well in downtown Pittsburgh! Cruise Fourth Avenue to see Pittsburgh´s old banking and financial district--once the second largest such district in the country, behind Wall Street. From there, go to Grant Street and view (among other things) some of the most handsome civic buildings in the country. Then, hang a left and check out Mellon Square, a cornucopia of historical office buildings, department stores, churches, and park space. After lunch, go back in time to the Monongahela Wharf and catch a glimpse of what Pittsburgh was like when it was a bustling harbor town. Finally, conclude your day with an evening tour of Pittsburgh´s Downtown Churches, some of which served the very earliest congregations in the United States. |
