Event:  Earth Day Tireless Project

Date: Thursday, April 22, 2010

Time: 3:30 - 6:30 p.m.

Neighborhood/Location: South Side

Event Description: This event is being sponsored by REI, one of our partners in the Tireless Project. Join us and our other partners for this special Earth Day event, meeting at REI in the South Side Works. Participants will remove debris and litter from the Monongahela Riverfront and perform general trail and riverfront stewardship including removal of litter and invasive plant species and tending/planting native trees and shrubs. Please dress appropriately for the task. We recommend close-toed shoes or boots, long pants and a long sleeve shirt. To get there from downtown, take Forbes Avenue to Birmingham Bridge. Turn right onto the Birmingham Bridge, then left onto E. Carson Street. Continue on East Carson Street to S. 27th Street. Turn left onto S. 27th Street. REI is at the end of 27th. Look for our Tireless banner outside of the store.

Event:  Illegal Dumpsite Cleanup in Hazelwood

Date:  Saturday, April 24, 2010

Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon

Neighborhood/Location: Sylvan Ave. in Hazelwood

Event Description: This project is in collaboration with the Hazelwood Initiative. Participants will be removing debris, including appliances, tires, and household trash, from a hillside in Hazelwood. Teamwork, ingenuity, and brute force will be required. There’s a good chance you’ll get dirty on this project, but an even better chance that you’ll have fun and feel a sense of accomplishment when it’s all done. Please wear sturdy, close-toed shoes or boots, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt. All equipment, supplies, and refreshments will be provided. To get there from downtown, take 2nd Avenue to Greenfield Ave./PA-885. Make a brief left onto Greenfield Ave., then an immediate right onto Irvine Street/PA-885. Stay on Irvine for about a mile, then make a left onto Hazelwood Ave. Go a few blocks and make a left onto Sylvan Ave. Look for us on the left towards the end of Sylvan Ave.

Event:  Tireless Friday

Date:  Friday, May 21, 2010

Time: 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Neighborhood/Location:  South Side Trail at 4th Street (Trailhead Parking at end of 4th Street) (map)

Event Description: As part of Great Outdoors Week, please join us for a cleanup of the Monongahela Riverfront along the South Side Trail and Mon Wharf. Participants will be removing debris and litter from the riverfront and will be planting native trees, shrubs and sunflowers along a new trail segment. Please dress appropriately for the task and be prepared for inclement weather. We recommend close-toed shoes or boots, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. As always, we’ll provide equipment, refreshments, instructions, and entertainment (after the cleanup). From downtown, take the Smithfield Street Bridge to Carson Street. Make a left onto E. Carson Street. Take the 2nd left onto 1st Street (just past the Exxon Station). Turn right at McKean Street. Take the 3rd left onto 4th Street. Follow to the riverfront (across railroad tracks), and make a right into the Trailhead Parking Lot. We’ll gather on the left of the trail, midway down the lot. Look for the Tireless Project banner.

Event: Tireless Project/ORSANO Riversweep

Date: Saturday, June 19, 2010

Time: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon

Neighborhood/Location: Chateau Trail and Ohio Riverfront, meeting at the end of Westhall Street, Pittsburgh  (map)

Event Description: Please join us for this Tireless Project along the Chateau Trail and Ohio Riverfront in conjunction with the ORSANCO River Sweep. Participants will be performing general riverfront stewardship including removal of invasive plant species, tending native trees and clearing rubbish and recyclables from the riverbank. To get there from the downtown Hilton, merge onto 279-N from Fort Pitt Blvd., then merge onto PA-65N via exit 7B on the left towards I-19/Ohio River Blvd. Take Chateau Street/US-19-S/West End Bridge exit towards PA-51/Western Ave. Take the Chateau ramp.  Stay straight to go onto Chateau Street. Take a slight right onto Beaver, then an almost immediate left onto Westhall Street.  Parking is along Westhall.  Look for our table and the Tireless Project Banner near the trail.

Event: Tireless Friday at Duck Hollow Trail, Mouth of Nine Mile Run

Date:  Friday, August 13, 2010

Time: 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Neighborhood/Location:  Duck Hollow/Mouth of Nine Mile Run; Old Browns Hill Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15217 (End of Road at Trailhead Parking Lot) (map)

Event Description: Please join us for our annual cleanup of Duck Hollow Trail and Monongahela Riverfront in partnership with Nine Mile Run Watershed Association. We’ll be removing litter and debris from along the banks of the Monongahela River and the Duck Hollow Trail. Please wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and sturdy (i.e. close-toed) shoes or boots, and be prepared for inclement weather. We’ll provide all of the equipment and supplies you’ll need, including live music and food at the end of the cleanup. To get there from downtown, take 376 East to the Squirrel Hill/Homestead exit. Proceed straight towards Homestead on Brownshill Road.  When the road becomes two lanes, stay in the left lane and turn left onto Old Brownshill Road (at the light near Wendy’s), then proceed down the hill to Duck Hollow Pier. We’ll assemble in the parking lot.

Event: Tireless Friday (International Coastal Cleanup)

Neighborhood/Location: Along the Lawrenceville Riverfront at the end of 40th Street, Lawrenceville, PA (Trailhead Parking Area) (map)

Event Description: Join us for our annual cleanup of the Lawrenceville Riverfront as part of the International Coastal Cleanup Day. We’ll be removing litter and debris from along the Lawrenceville Riverfront Trail and adjacent Allegheny River riparian buffer zone.  Come dressed appropriately and be prepared for inclement weather.  We suggest long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and sturdy boots or close-toed shoes. We’ll provide all the equipment and supplies you’ll need as well as refreshments afterwards. To get there from downtown Pittsburgh, take Liberty Avenue into Lawrenceville and turn left onto 40th Street. Proceed towards the 40th Street Bridge and turn right just before you get to the bridge. Continue on 40th Street. Park in the lot at the end of the street. Look for our table and banner in the small park near the trail.
