Pittsburgh residents are
encouraged to spay or neuter their pets to reduce the number of
homeless pets and the number of tax dollars spent to care for or
destroy unwanted animals.
The City has discontinued
the Spay/Neuter Subsidy Program effective July 6, 2004. Spaying
and neutering is required by state law for dogs or cats adopted
from a public or private pound, animal shelter, humane society or
other similar entity that releases dogs and cats for adoption.

Several institutions and organizations offer help
for pet spay and neutering or low-cost service. Some programs may
be restricted by geographical areas, income levels or veterinarians.
