Lighting of the City's Holiday Tree

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl will officially kick off the City of Pittsburgh's holiday festivities by lighting the City's 56-foot holiday tree on the City-County Building's portico this Friday, November 18, 2011 at noontime - just hours before Pittsburgh's skyscrapers illuminate the skyline during Light Up Night external site - opens in new window.

"Sounds of the Season" will serve as this year's theme for the City's annual tree lighting ceremony. The Mayor encourages Pittsburgh families to make donations of new or used toys as well as non-perishable food items to the Salvation Army Food & Toy Drive. The organization will be onsite collecting items and monetary donations from 12 to 1 p.m.

"Let us ring in the holiday season the way Pittsburghers know how - by celebrating and giving," said Ravenstahl. "Come down to the Portico during lunchtime, bring your family and friends - and a donation. In return, enjoy free caroling, warm coffee and sweets, and be part of Pittsburgh's most memorable tree lighting ceremony."

Following the tree lighting ceremony, the Point Park University Singers will resume performing holiday music until 1 p.m. All attending the gathering will enjoy cookies provided by the International Culinary Schools at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh as well as coffee and apple cider.

Mayor Ravenstahl and Citiparks would like to thank all of the Pittsburgh schools that participated in our annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony and Ornament Project, "Sounds of the Season." All of the ornaments that we received this year were beautiful, and we truly appreciate the hard work that you put into making them. We hope that you enjoyed creating the ornaments as much as we enjoyed receiving them! Your beautiful decorations will hang on the tree in front of the City-County building throughout the 2011 holiday season.
