2010 Black History Month Honorees
Black History Month
Each February, the City of Pittsburgh observes Black History Month. The celebration often includes an opening reception, a display in the City-County Building Lobby and activities at community recreation centers located throughout the City of Pittsburgh.
2010 EVENT: "History in the Making: Honoring our Young African American Leaders of Today"
This free exhibit was displayed in City-County Building during Black History Month. It profiled ten local African Americans making strides in their fields and great contributions to our community.
The ten honorees represented the fields of arts & entertainment, business/finance, civil rights/community action, education, health & wellness, military/law enforcement, politics, religion, science and technology, and social services.
The exhibit spotlighted the accomplishments of these younger individuals by showcasing their contributions to the region and describing their plans for the future. To add historical perspective to the exhibit, the 10 honorees were compared to well-known African Americans from the past who represent the same fields.
Black History Month - Community Lecture Schedule
In conjunction with the month-long "History in the Making" exhibit, Citiparks and the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh hosted a series of lectures at community sites throughout the month.
The free events provided an opportunity for many of the exhibit honorees to share their success stories and to inspire others to leave their mark on the greater Pittsburgh community.
