Ambulance (Medic Unit) Division
The Ambulance Division of Pittsburgh Emergency Medical Services (EMS) went into service in August of 1975. At that time, the division consisted of 40 Pennsylvania State Certified Paramedics working on 4 Advanced Life Support Ambulances. Today, there are over 110 Paramedics and over 50 Paramedic Crew Chiefs assigned to the division staffing 13 Advanced Life Support Ambulances (“Medic Units”).
The Ambulance Division is responsible for providing prehospital emergency medical care to the sick and injured citizens and guests of the 88 neighborhoods in the City of Pittsburgh. Approximately 55,000 citizens and guests call for EMS help each year. It is not uncommon for our ambulances to answer several hundred calls for service in any 24 hour period.
Along with the treatment and transport of patients, the Ambulance Division is also responsible for providing medical coverage for numerous Special Events and Details throughout the City of Pittsburgh. These events include professional sporting events (i.e., Steelers Football, Pirate Baseball, Penguin Hockey, etc.), college and high school events, musical concerts and neighborhood functions. Some of the larger events the division covers include the Great Race, Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix and Three Rivers Regatta.
