City Council Honors Stephen Foster
On July 7th, Council celebrated the life and art of Stephen Foster by declaring July 11th "Stephen Foster Doo Dah Day" in the City of Pittsburgh. "Doo Dah Days" is the annual festival in Foster's honor organized by the Lawrenceville Historical Society and Allegheny Cemetery Historical Association.
Foster is often considered a founder of pop music, and is the only composer to have written two state songs, Kentucky's "My Old Kentucky Home" and Florida's "Old Folks at Home ('Swanee River')". Foster grew up in Lawrenceville in the heart of District 7.
Pictured above is Councilman Dowd, who sponsored the proclamation creating "Stephen Foster Doo Dah Day," and Donna Booth and Tom Schofstall of the Lawrenceville Historical Society.
