The
Commission is a law enforcement agency which derives its authority
from the
City Fair Practices Provisions
found in Article
V, Chapters 651 through 659 of the Pittsburgh City Code. These provisions make it
unlawful to discriminate on the basis of race, religion, family
status, age, ancestry, national origin, place of birth, sex, sexual
orientation and non-job-related handicap or disability in employment,
housing and public accommodations.
Where discrimination is found, attempts are made to seek a voluntary agreement on compliance with the law and appropriate relief for
the victim. When such agreements can not be made, the Commission
may seek legal enforcement of its decisions.
The Commission
on Human Relations is also responsible for promoting improved human
and community relations in the city through community education
and mediation.
