Signs of Theft

Theft Indicators:

  1. Driver youthful age, driving to late at night.
  2. Furtive looks, nervous, = head bobs
  3. Driver not familiar with area.
  4. Driver not familiar with car and accessories.
  5. Late night slow driving through residential areas.
  6. Reckless Driving, no concern for vehicle.
  7. Clean car/ dirty tag or clean tag on dirty vehicle.
  8. Multiple juveniles in vehicle.
  9. Cars caravanning through residential areas.
  10. Temporary tags from any state.
  11. Open windows in inclement weather.
  12. Missing parts: wheels, radio, seats.
  13. Illegally parked or abandoned.
  14. Interior lights left on at night: glove box.

Tell Tale signs of Theft:

  1. Door molding no longer "fits" car (fit & finish at the factory is perfect-- sign of "flexed window.")
  2. Slight damage under door lock molding (slip tool used under molding to open door).
  3. Broken glass -- usually passenger side rear window, especially in winter.
  4. Steering column is wrapped with tape or a shirt to cover theft damage to column.
  5. No ignition in the car.
  6. Key in car, but ignition is in the off position.
  7. A plate that is carelessly or hurriedly attached.

Driver Behavior:

  1. A driver who appears to be underage.
  2. A driver who looks away when he spots an officer/ marked police car.
  3. A driver who wears gloves in warm weather.
  4. A driver operating vehicle on a flat tire or rim.
