When You Need A Sign Permit:
A sign permit is required prior to the erection, repair, or alteration of any sign.
How To Obtain a Sign Permit:
Sign Permit Application 
To apply for a sign permit, start at the Zoning Counter, 200 Ross Street - 3rd Floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Application must be made by a
sign contractor registered with the City of Pittsburgh. For most signs, an occupancy permit is also required, and if the sign is illuminated, an electrical permit must also be obtained by an electrician registered by the City of Pittsburgh.
Step 1: Zoning Counter - Begin your application at the Zoning Counter to have it reviewed for compliance with the Zoning Code. If an occupancy permit is required, you must have this approval before the application can be processed by the Bureau of Building Inspection.
Step 2: Engineer's Counter - Construction drawings are reviewed here for compliance with the Building Code. See drawing requirements below.
Step 3: Electrical Counter -

Step 4: License Counter & Cashier - The final stop is at the cashier where payment is made by check or money order.
What To Bring With You:
- A check or money order to pay for the permit. (cash or credit cards are not accepted)
- Correct address and lot & block number for the structure
- The sign contractor's registration number and signature on the application
- If it is an existing sign, a photo showing the sign and the adjacent area. (for Zoning)
- If it is a new installation, three copies of a plot plan showing the location of the sign
- If the sign is mounted more than 8’-0” above grade, two sets of signed and sealed
drawings from a registered professional with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will be required. These drawings must detail
how the sign will be attached to the structure. If the sign is larger than 8 square feet or it
is mounted on a pole, one set of structural and wind load calculations with the seal of the
professional will also be required.

Inspection
It is the responsibility of the permit holder to arrange for all required
inspections by contacting the appropriate inspector. The inspector's name and phone number may be found in bold print on the permit.
