Occupancy Permit  

When You Need An Occupancy Permit:

An Occupancy Permit is required for a new or changed use of land and/or structure hereafter erected, structurally altered or enlarged or changed in use or to a greater intensity of use, or for the erection, enlargement or reconstruction of a sign or sign structure except for:

(A)  A sign less than four square feet in area which meets the requirements of the Zoning Ordinance.

(B)  The commercial cultivation of plants or plantings.

How To Obtain An Occupancy Permit:

To apply for an Occupancy Permit, the applicant must apply in person at the Zoning Counter, 200 Ross Street, 3rd Floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Complete the top half of the application and bring it to the counter where a zoning specialist will ask additional questions about the property and proposed change.

What To Bring With You:

When applying for an Occupancy Permit in person, you must bring the following materials with you, or your application cannot be processed.

  • A check or money order to pay for the permit.  (cash or credit cards are not accepted)
  • Correct Address
  • A Plot Plan
