When You Need An Electrical Permit:
An electrical permit is required before any electrical work is performed within the City of Pittsburgh.
How To Obtain an Electrical Permit:
All applications for an electrical permit must be made
by an individual licensed as an electrical contractor by
the City of Pittsburgh.
By Mail:
Step 1: Download the appropriate permit
application below:
Step 2: Mail the completed application
along with a check or money order for the fee to:
City of Pittsburgh
Bureau of Building Inspection-Electrical Division
200 Ross St. Rm. 320
Pittsburgh, PA 15219
Step 3: Staff at the Bureau of Building
Inspection will process the application and mail the permit. Drop Off:
Applications may also be picked up and/or dropped off at the electrical counter on the 3rd floor, 200 Ross Street,
Pittsburgh, PA 15219. However, the permit will
not be issued over the counter. All applications will be processed in the order in which they are received.
Once all of the correct information has been received and it has been approved, the permit will be mailed to
the license holder.
What To Bring With You:
- A completed application signed by the licensed contractor.
- A check or money order to pay for the permit. Cash or credit cards are not accepted.
- Lookup number from Duquesne Light for all service work.
- Two sets of any required plans. The plans shall be signed and sealed by a registered design professional in accordance with 49 Pa. Code § 9.141.
- If this submission is related to a building permit, then attach a copy of the approved building permit to the application.

Inspection
It is the responsibility of the license
holder to arrange for all required inspections by contacting
the appropriate inspector. The name and phone number of the
assigned inspector is printed on the permit. Required inspections
include:
(1) A rough-in inspection before any work is concealed.
(2) A final inspection when all work is complete.
